A strong history
The heritage of THOMMEN AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENT Ltd. reaches far back when it was founded as REVUE THOMMEN AG in 1853 as a watch manufacturer. Until the late 80’s famous time pieces as the “cricket” wristwatch, also known as the Presidents watch, were manufactured for more than 130 years. Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnes – and many top aviation industry executives later on, were wearing THOMMEN time pieces.
The aviation history started in 1915 and the company can now look back on a history of over a hundred years. In 1916 the Swiss Air Force contracted with THOMMEN to design, develop and deliver an aircraft chronograph. That initial involvement in aviation instrumentation would shape the company’s future, and in 1936, a major contract from the Swiss Military proved to be the turning point in the history of the company. That contract entrusted THOMMEN with the development and supply of altimeters, airspeed indicators, vertical speed indicators, clocks and the landing gear for the C-35, a multipurpose, biplane manufactured in Switzerland. To this day THOMMEN instruments are hand crafted by trained Swiss technicians and all THOMMEN electronic products are built with the same commitment to quality craftsmanship.
THOMMEN AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENT Ltd. is now growing in its core business which is the mission equipment focusing on innovative digital solutions.
Today a culture of Swiss precision prevails in every discipline within THOMMEN and raises the meaning of the words “Swiss Made” to new heights.
