The CH-53K model is well on its way to becoming the world's premier heavy lift helicopter, leveraging the accumulated lessons learned over 50 years of manufacturing and operational success with its CH-53A, CH-53D/G, and CH-53E predecessors. Built to thrive in the modern battlefield, the extremely capable CH-53K aircraft is designed to be intelligent, reliable, low maintenance and survivable across the full spectrum of operating conditions. Expeditionary in nature, the CH-53K aircraft is designed to be fully shipboard compatible and capable of operating from austere and remote forward operating bases. The CH-53K helicopter is the Marine Corps' critical land and sea based logistics connector.
Sikorsky has designed and built the CH-53K heavy lift helicopter to carry more than 27,000 pounds over a mission radius of 110 nautical miles, which is more than triple the external load carrying capacity of the CH-53E aircraft. With a similar footprint to its predecessor, the 88,000-pound maximum gross weight CH-53K aircraft features powerful new engines, lightweight composite structures, innovative transmission design, fourth generation main rotor blades, and fly-by-wire flight controls. The new heavy lifter will allow the U.S. Marine Corps, and other international militaries, to move troops and equipment from ship to shore, and to higher altitude terrain, more quickly and effectively than ever before.
The CH-53K is capable of lifting 16,330 kg /36,000 lbs externally and has a cabin that is a 30 cm/12 in wider at the floor than its closest competitor, making it ideal for carrying more with fewer trips. Its cabin size allows faster, more flexible loading /unloading and does not require reconfiguration when transitioning from troop transport to internal supply transport. In addition, the CH-53K is at the beginning of its design life, with room to grow when the customer requires more lift capability.
